This Month’s Cancer Awareness: UV Safety
Over two million people are diagnosed with skin cancer annually making it the most common form of cancer in the United States. Here are a few tips from SkinCancer.org to help prevent skin cancer:
- Shade: The sun is the strongest between 10 am and 4 pm.
- Burning: One of the most important things is not to burn. The risk for melanoma is much greater if a person has had five or more sunburns in their lifetime.
- Avoid tanning or tanning booths: The UV radiation from the sun increases your risk for skin cancer however, you are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma if you typically tan indoors.
- Cover up: Clothing is a great barrier against the sun’s harmful rays. Long sleeves and pants are the best protection.
- Sunscreen: Cover up with one ounce of sunscreen over your entire body at least 30 minutes before going outside. Make sure to reapply every 2 hours or after swimming.
- Examine yourself: Make it a point to do a head-to-toe self exam every month as well as seeing a physician for a skin exam at least once per year.

One thing Dr. Norris focuses on is encouraging younger people to reduce the risk of cancer by taking control of their health. For people ages 20 and older, having periodic health exams and cancer-related check-ups are vital. These check-ups should include health counseling and, depending on a person’s age and gender, exams for cancers of the thyroid, oral cavity, skin, lymph nodes, testes, and ovaries, as well as for some non-malignant (non-cancerous) diseases.
