BIGGEST EVENT OF THE YEAR COMING FEBRUARY 28, 2017
Mardi Gras Casino Royale
New Orleans was established in 1718 by French-Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville. The first recorded celebration of the Mardi Gras holiday was on March 2, 1699, which was celebrated as part of an observance of Catholic practice. By the 1730s, Mardi Gras was celebrated openly in New Orleans, and in the early 1740s, Louisiana’s governor, the Marquis de Vaudreuil, established elegant society balls. This became the model for how we celebrate Mardi Gras today.
Like those elegant balls of old, we at the Heartland Cancer Foundation want to celebrate Mardi Gras in style. This year, the foundation will be hosting its second annual Mardi Gras Casino Royale on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. The event will take place at the Hillcrest Country Club in Lincoln, Nebraska, which offers an appealing atmosphere and ambiance that will no doubt bring out your Mardi Gras spirit. A wide variety of Cajun-style appetizers and desserts will make your mouth water as you take a look at and bid on our great selection of silent auction items. Some of the items that will be in the auction include:
Also, you will have a chance to enter our raffle for a chance to win a trip for two to the city of riverboats, jazz, Creole cuisine and Mardi Gras — New Orleans! Don’t miss out on this wonderful 4 day/3 night experience in “The Big Easy.” This prize is valued at $3,500.00. Tickets are $50.00 each and can be purchased on our website (HeartlandCancerFoundation.org) or at the event. The drawing will take place the evening of February 28.
The evening’s entertainment will consist of Casino gaming — Roulette, Black Jack and Craps — as well as jazz music throughout the evening. The Peter Bouffard Jazz Quintet, whose members (Dr. Peter Bouffard, guitar; Dr. Darryl White, trumpet; Dr. Paul Haar, saxophone; Dr. Hans Sturm, bass; and Dr. Dave Hall, percussion) are all a part of the UNL Faculty Jazz Ensemble. The group gained international attention in 2014 with a European concert tour. They performed in France and Switzerland at The Montreux International Jazz Festival, Jazz at Vienne Festival, Jazz at Brienz Festival and an invitational performance at the United Nations.
In 2016, Mardi Gras Casino Royale took in $75,000, with proceeds going towards the Foundation’s mission of helping local cancer patients in need. We hope to see you this year and are excited to see where the evening takes us as we dive into another year of connecting patients to care. Divas and Divots Women's Golf Tournament
The first annual golf tournament put on by the Heartland Cancer Foundation Guild was a great success. The weather was perfect and the golfers were enthusiastic. 19 teams of women took to the links at Yankee Hill Country Club on September 16 to raise money in honor of Dianne Sizemore, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2015.
Games, prizes and the raffle of a beautiful Louis Vuitton purse helped bring in money and add to the fun atmosphere. A delicious sack lunch was provided to each golfer. More than $8,000 was raised at this event. This money will be given to the Heartland Cancer Foundation to benefit low income cancer patients in a seven county area, including Lancaster county. These patients can receive assistance with transportation and with oral medications.
The 2017 Divas & Divots event will be held in June. Look for more information in upcoming newsletters.

Cervical Cancer
January is cervical cancer awareness month. Cervical cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the cervix. The cervix is at the lower end of the uterus and the top of the birth canal. Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by long-term infections with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a sexually transmitted disease. There are vaccines available that will protect against these types of HPV and can greatly reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Young girls and boys should get an HPV vaccination before they become sexually active to reduce the risk of contracting HPV. Other factors that increase the risk of cervical cancer are giving birth many times, smoking cigarettes and using oral contraceptives for a long time. The chance of cancer increases as you get older.
There are usually no signs or symptoms of early cervical cancer. Cervical cancer develops slowly over time. Before cancer appears, the cells of the cervix change. These abnormal cells can become cancer. Having a PAP test performed by a physician to check for abnormal cells or having a test for HPV can find cells that may become cancer. These can then be treated before cancer forms. A woman should have her first PAP test at the age of 21 and every 3 to 5 years after that.
Cervical cancer can usually be cured if it is found and treated in the early stages.
